On May 20, the 2019 Natural Resources Science Popularization Explanation Contest was held in Chenzhou City and 35 contestants from all over the country demonstrated the charm of natural resources and the mystery of the universe with their voices and images, which won applause from the audience and judges.

As one of the main activities of the 7th CMGE, the contest was sponsored by the Ministry of Natural Resources, undertaken by the China Geological Museum and the Hunan Provincial Department of Natural Resources, and co-sponsored by the Hunan Geological Museum and the Chenzhou Bureau of Natural Resources and Planning. After three months of recommendation, selection and video review, 35 excellent contestants were selected to enter the field competition.

At the site of the Explanation Contest

The contestants from the heaven and earth to the universe, from mountains, lakes and seas to urban civilization, with the help of multimedia or auxiliary objects, have made a comprehensive and vivid explanation of natural resources scientific knowledge.

The contestants then draw questions and explains them.

After on-site scoring, 10 expert judges awarded three first-class prizes, that were Li Zongjian of Qingdao Shell Museum, Li Wenjun of Science and Technology and Foreign Cooperation Department of Shaanxi Natural Resources Department, and Deng Feifan of China Ocean Newspaper, 7 second-class prizes, that were Sun Jingxuan of China Geological Museum and others, and 25 third-class prizes, that were Song Shangru of National Marine Environment Forecasting Center and others.

"The contestants of this contest have made good use of the contest platform to popularize scientific knowledge in the field of natural resources to the whole society." Zhang Hongtao, a counselor and expert judge of the State Council, said in his concluding comments, "Popularization of science is a seed, which should be sown in the hearts of more young people!"
