Jiang Mengnan

2024-09-10

Jiang Mengnan was born in 1992 into an ethnic Yao family in Yizhang County of Chenzhou City in 1992. At the age of six months, due to ototoxic drugs, she suffered severe neurological hearing loss, with the left ear loss greater than 105 decibels and the right ear completely losing hearing, which caused her inability to speak.

Jiang Mengnan’s parents are both high school teachers. In order to help Jiang Mengnan better integrate into society, they decided to teach her vocalization and lip language instead of sign language. It is precisely because of the persistence of her parents that Jiang Mengnan bravely overcame seemingly insurmountable obstacles in her life.

By learning lip language and practicing speaking, she can communicate normally with others, and studied in regular schools. Due to being unable to fully observe teachers’ mouth shapes in class, she put in several times more effort than her classmates through reading the words on the blackboard and self-study after class.

After graduating from elementary school, she was admitted to Chenzhou No.6 Middle School with the second highest score in the city.

In 2010, Jiang Mengnan took the college entrance examination. Although her total score exceeded the first tier admission line, she felt that she had not performed well and insisted on retaking her senior year of high school, again. In the second year, she was admitted to Jilin University, majoring in pharmacy program with a total score of 615. She pursued her postgraduate study at the university, studying computer-aided drug design, with computer-aided drug design as her research direction.

In 2018, she was accepted as a PhD candidate at Tsinghua University’s School of Life Sciences. In 2020, she was elected as the fifth president of the Tsinghua University Student Accessibility Development Research Association.

In 2018, she implanted an artificial cochlea in her right ear, regaining her hearing that she had lost for 26 years.

In January 2022, she was selected as a candidate for the “Touching Hunan Figures of Touching China 2021” and was awarded the 2021 Tsinghua University Student Person of the Year.

On March 3, 2022, she received the award of “Person Touching China for 2021”.
