It is a nice season for planting trees in March. The first carbon sink forest of Hunan province was launched in Tianjiawan village, Suxian district, Chenzhou city recently. Xiang Lili- Secretary of Chenzhou Municipal Party Committee and some municipal leaders of Chenzhou city voluntarily planted trees there to call more Chenzhou people join in this plantation work and ecological civilization construction work.
“Carbon sink” refers to the processes, activities and mechanisms of removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. “Carbon sink forest” refers to the forest for carbon sequestration. All our daily basic necessities were closely related to carbon emissions, so all people are encouraged to join in this voluntary plantation activity in the forest. Chenzhou Carbon Sink Forest is the first carbon sink project available in Hunan province. It was introduced that 2million yuan would be placed for its first phase project on 952mu carbon sink forests construction, 554mu of which were for newly planting ones and 398mu were for upgrading ones. It was planned to be finished in one year. Once ready, 1800tons of carbon dioxides can be absorbed by the forest and 1600tons of oxygen can be released by it as well. Besides the cadres of Chenzhou government, many citizens participated in this trees plantation activity to contribute their efforts to environmental protection.
Disregarded the rainy and cold weather, Xiang Lili took active actions on the plantation work and said to all attendants: “As a city in the forest, Chenzhou city is with unique ecological condition, so we should achieve more results on trees plantation and ecological construction. It expressed our determination and confidence on long-term afforestation by attending this voluntary plantation activity every year.” Xiang also stated that afforestation was an obligation and a responsibility for all people. So besides the government guidance, more social efforts should be tried together on this work. Some market mechanisms should be carried out on this work to attract more people join in this work.
It was learned from the statistics shown by Chenzhou Forestry Bureau that more than 200 people attended this voluntary plantation activity. More than 500 seedlings of osmanthus, camphor, gingko, cinnamomum burmannii, elaeocarpus decipiens, etc. were planted in the forest on that day.
