Hole Fort Sites of Western Jin Dynasty Found in Rucheng

The office for the Preservation of Ancient Monuments of Rucheng county, Chenzhou city discovered a cave monument- Shijingyand of the Western Jin Dynasty cave in Xilan, Maqiao village. This cave was processed into civil defenses by using karst caves to elude from the chaos of wars.

 

This cave entrance is of 20m high and 11m wide and the rock masonry wall for defense fortification is 12 meters high and 9 meters wide. The wall has preserved more than 10 observation holes. Only in the walls of the lower-right corner of the building a width of 0.9 meters, height of 1.6 meters of shimen access to the hole can be found. Three Chinese characters “Shi Jing Yan” were curved on the rock door and signed as “restored in the Western Jing Dynasty” on the left side of door.

 

Once entering the cave from the only entrance, rock stairs, walls (barracks monuments) in the wide interior, stalactites and strange rocks will be found available in the cave.
 

 

With the preliminary conjecture of heritage sector, this ancient cave is more than 1700 years’ old. It is the oldest one discovered in Rucheng county worth of the historical study and tourism development.
