World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated every year on 5th June to raise global awareness of the need to take positive environmental action. It is run by the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP). It was the day that United Nations Conference on the Human Environment began. The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment was from 5–16 June 1972. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972. The first World Environment Day was on 1973. World Environment Day is hosted every year by a different city with a different theme and is commemorated with an international exposition in the week of 5 June.
On June 5, 2012, the 41th World Environment Day, Chenzhou Government held the press conference to inform the public with Chenzhou’s environment data. The principals of Chenzhou Environment Bureau answered the questions on the spot.
Generally speaking, in 2011, the water quality of Chenzhou was in good condition; the excellent rate of air quality in center Chenzhou was 100%; traffic noise of the center city and 9 counties of Chenzhou was within the 1st functional standard of acoustic environment quality; industrial solid waste amounted to 174.6 million tons with the growth rate of 12.56%; comprehensive utilization of industrial solid waste was 122.95 million tons with the increase of 143.56%.
The principals from Chenzhou Environment Bureau remark in the conference that Chenzhou will launch the management measures as follows: first, backward production processes which don’t fit national industrial policy will be canceled; second, projects which don’t pass or meet the environment evaluation will be stopped from producing for further improvement; third, projects not well-executed on environment protection, safety measurement and occupational health should be stopped; fourth, enterprises without pollution control facilities or facilities not operated well and with excessive emission should be closed for repairing; fifth, projects not in accordance with the requirements of the protective distance should be revised.
