It was reported the first folk song contest “happy Xiaoxiang, beautiful Chenzhou- my hometown” was finished in Jiahe county on Oct. 28, 2014. 55 delegations from 11 counties and districts of Chenzhou city competed intensely in the 2-day finals. “Top ten original singing awards”, “top ten new folk song singing awards” and ten golden awards for creation of new folk songs were selected out after the contest.

This folk song contest was one of the activities for the year of mass culture themed with“happy Xiaoxiang, beautiful Chenzhou- my hometown”. It was sponsored by Chenzhou Municipal Propaganda Department, Chenzhou Culture, Radio, Press and Publication Bureau and Jiahe Government.

Over 200 contestants selected or recommended by the counties and districts of Chenzhou city presented their excellent performance on the contest. Two groups as original singing group and new folk song singing group were divided on the contest. All the contestants who attended the original singing group were local farmers and students from local primary & secondary schools. They sang Chenzhou traditional folk songs handed down from ancestors by oral. The new folk songs were generated or recomposed from traditional folk music elements, which were rich with local folk culture.

Zhou Yingchun- Member of Chenzhou Municipal Party Committee Standing Committee and Minister of Chenzhou Municipal Propaganda Department expressed her wishes on the opening ceremony that levels of party committees, governments and propaganda departments could pay more attention and support to promote local folk music’s creation, try to create eries works with high quality and local features, and contribute more to promote Chenzhou city’s construction on “strong culture city” and Chenzhou city’s “take-off”.
