Shimen Village in Linwu County — Little known Ancient Building Group in Ming Dynasty

Shimen Village is located in Huatang Town Linwu County. If you do not pay attention, it is hard to believe that there are such dense ancient residential groups in the remote village away from the city. The existing residential buildings in the Ming Dynasty are one of the ancient buildings which have been discovered and preserved more completely so far in Chenzhou.

Former residence of Jiang Shilin

January 8, the reporter saw in the Shimen village that all the ancient buildings, the wardroom and former residence of early scholars Jiang Shilin in the Ming Dynasty are particularly with characteristics. According to the local genealogy historical evidence, Jiang Shilin was born in the Ming Yongle twenty-one (1423), entered into the Imperial Academy after the Scholars, and then released to the Xiaogan County, Hubei Province. Jiang Shilin was the first official after the Chiang ancestor in this village moved here during the Song Chunyu years.

Jiang Shilin Wardroom is located under the Hou Longshan with the construction area of about 400 square meters. The interior is the bucket type wooden frame and the external walls are black brick; there are Taishi wall when enter into the door, courtyard behind the wall and wings on both sides of the courtyard; halls behind the middle of the courtyard for the guests and business; master rooms on both sides of hall, using for the study and banquet guests. On the left of wardroom, there is a former residence of Jiang Shilin. The building has two floors, covers an area of about 300 square meters and the structure is similar to the wardroom.

Three ancestral halls of the Ming Dynasty were also found in Shimen Village. One is the ancestral Hall of Chiang, which is the general ancestral hall of Shimen Chiang. The ancestral hall is the three halls with two wells and the whole halls are supported by more than 70 stakes with tenon connected wood structure, bucket type wooden frame for front and back halls, in addition to the mixed structure of lift beam and bucket type for middle hall, and outside of the ancestral hall are enclosed by black brick walls. In addition, there are the temples of three brothers, Jiang Shidao, Jiang Shiyuan and Jiang Shichong, living in the Ming Dynasty and they all are two halls style ancestral building.

Through the textual research by Xie Wujing of the cultural relic expert of Hunan Province, 7 of residential buildings of the Ming Dynasty in the village are also well-preserved and all are black bricks and tiles, having an antique flavor. Ming Dynasty towers, Shilong Bridge, feng shui dike and other buildings are widely distributed in the village. The roadway, drainage facilities, ponds, and preservation with a strong Ming Dynasty color are also well-preserved.

Hou Longshan of Shimen Village


Recently, the "Rural Tourism Poverty Alleviation Project Action Plan" were jointly developed and issued by the National Tourism Administration, the National Development and Reform Commission, the State Council Poverty Alleviation Office and more than 10 ministries and the Shimen Village of Linwu County has been listed as the key village of national rural tourism poverty alleviation. Linwu County will take this opportunity to increase publicity and protection efforts for Shimen ancient buildings, deeply research the traditional culture, and strive to completely present the historical treasure to the world.
