2022-04-13

"Donating blood has been part of my life, and I joined the voluntary blood donation service team in the hope that more people will join us," said Chen Xiangyu, an experienced blood donor.

Born in 1992, Chen Xiangyu from Chenzhou city now works as a takeaway rider. A few days ago, he finished the 30th blood donation at his 30th birthday. Young as he is, he has been donating blood for 11 years.

Chen has such a strong will for a reason. In 2011, while Chen was working in Beijing, one of his colleagues had a car accident and lost a lot of blood. Without hesitation, he rushed to the hospital to donate blood, which saved his colleague's life. Enlightened by this, he had the idea of blood donation.

In 11 years, he has donated his whole blood 11 times and 37 therapeutic doses of platelets, totaling 11,800 milliliters.

As Chen learned more about blood donation, he realized that only by involving more people in it could more lives be saved. With this belief in mind, Chen joined the voluntary blood donation service team in 2019.

Now, volunteering has become part of Chen's life. Wherever he goes, he always carries his red volunteer vest, ready to work. Often, after finishing the volunteer work late, he continued delivering food until midnight.

Chen never tires of long-term volunteering and night cycling, but enjoys them. When the voluntary spirit won him recognition and appreciation from the citizens and blood bank staff, he said that he just hoped to spread the benefits of blood donation as an ordinary volunteer.

Over the past three years, Chen has spent more than 1,000 hours on volunteer service, engaging in popular science explanation, publicity, volunteer recruitment and assistance in blood collection, etc.

In addition, he also explored new ways of publicity and recruitment, advocating more people to participate in blood donation by means of new media. According to statistics, his publicity drew more than 100 blood donors.

After years of persistence and efforts, Chen has gained a pile of certificates of blood donation and the honor of volunteer service of blood donation in Hunan Province. "Donating blood and volunteering have not only helped others, but also enriched my life. I will keep doing it!" noted Chen.
