By 2001 Chenzhou has 21 research institutes and nearly 60,000 professionals and technicians of all disciplines. The city has established technological partnership with over 80 domestic universities, research institutions and large enterprises.
In recent years, the scientific and technological results translation rate has reached 88.6%, higher than the national and provincial average. Currently, eight out of the city's 11 counties (cities, districts) are ranked as national exemplary counties in science and technology; they are Suxian, Zixing, Guiyang, Guidong, Jiahe, Beihu, and Yizhang. The county-level city Zixing has also been identified as the "National Sustainable Development Experimental Zone".
Chenzhou has 5 provincial-level economic and technological development zones, that is, Cheng Qianling Economic and Technological Development Zone of Chenzhou city, San Jiangkou Economic Development Zone of Rucheng county, Zhuquan Economic and Technological Development Zone of Jiahe county, Nan Jingdong Economic and Technological Development Zone of Yizhang county, and Dongjiang Economic Development Zone of Zixing city.
Currently, the Science and Technology Integration Plan covering Chenzhou, Zixing and Guiyang is in the pipeline. When it is completed, a high-tech zone (Chenzhou High Technology Development Zone), two industrial zones, three technical areas, four science and technology bases, and five science and technology parks will be put into place.
