Dabujiang quilting embroidery is a popular primitive ecological plastic art in southern Hunan, which is in rags and old clothes everywhere as raw material and in black, white, blue, red and yellow as main colors. The inheritors combining with the unconstrained imagination elaborately produce the art works full of rich local flavor to convey the rich and colorful emotional world.
The content of Dabujiang quilting embroidery is also very rich and simple, divided in 3 aspects:
(1) The reaction of the people to pray for life and emotion, including folk stories and legends, such as the Eight Fairies, Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai, Woodcutter Liu Hai, Seven fairies and so on;
(2) To express the desire and blessing of master, including the words, such as the Fu, Lu, Shou, Xi, double happiness, live long and prosper, old age enjoys a long happy life, bring in wealth and treasure, dragon and phoenix, wish the elderly health and longevity and so on;
(3) Uses the things around as the performance themes, including flowers and plants, such as lotus, pomegranates, orchids, clubs and so on; animals and birds, such as tigers, monkeys, pigs, chicken, ducks, magpies, mandarin ducks, dragon and phoenix, bats, insects, birds, etc. The tigers, magpies, bats and other patterns are used for children against evil spirits; the ducks swim, baby, carp and lotus and other patterns are used for newly-married couple, which symbolizes the harmonious marriage, and looking forward to a happy family and many sons.
