It was learned that the State Forestry released relative files which approved the inspection of Dongjiang lake and other 19 national wetland parks (pilot) and confirmed all them to be as official “national wetland park”. Zixing city’s image and popularity would be further upgraded and its environmental protection and tourism, social and economic development would further improved after Dongjiang lake became national wetland park.

The surface area of Dongjiang lake is 160square kilometers with the impoundage of 8.12billion cubic meters. Its water quality well met the state first level standard of surface water. Dongjiang lake is famous as “Dongting lake of south Hunan”. As “national 4A tourism landscape”, “national landscape resort” and “the first batch of national ecological tourism demonstration”, Dongjiang lake is not only valuable for protection, science and research, education and tourism, but also with some ecological, social and economic functions as flood control, irrigation & electricity generation, fishery production, and etc. Furthermore, Dongjiang lake is located in the ecological sensitivity area of south China, so it is with abundant wetland biological diversity and wetland landscapes, which upgraded it to be a representative of the combination of village and wetland and a typical case of village wetland culture in south China.

In November, 2007, Dongjiang lake was approved as national wetland park pilot by the State Forestry Bureau. Zixing city kept the principal of “ecology first, scientific recover, moderate exploration, and rational utilization” to carry out the protection, recover construction, governance of basic conditions, capacity construction and other pilot work for Dongjiang lake national wetland park.

In recent years, over 13million yuan special capitals were accumulated to be placed by Zixing city, which helped to fully finish the construction of Dongjiang lake wetland propaganda and education center, recover of Huangcao wetland, recover of bird habitats from Pingshi to Bailang, upgrading of 6 wetland protection administration stations of the lake, and etc. Assisted with those series work, 48,039hectares of Dongjiang lake wetland’s ecological functions were recovered, which helped to upgrade the regional ecological environment condition and improve Zixing city’s comprehensive level and capacity of sustainable development. Its highlights on effects of ecology, society and economy also helped to set an example for the protection and recover of typical lake wetland ecological system in south China.
