Ecology is one of the best advantages of Zixing city while Dongjiang lake is the best resource of Zixing city. In order to protect the lake, Zixing city placed great efforts on it. By well implementing the development strategy of “upgrading the city with ecological construction”, Zixing city placed the protection of Dongjiang lake as the top issue of its development and combined the advantage of “water city” to promote the water ecological civilization construction and fight for the establishment of “famous ecological city of China”. Zixing city which was established along Dongjiang lake was with the best protected and wide area of ecological system of Hunan province. It was with over 3.20million mu forest lands and 71% forest coverage. Dongjiang lake was not just with high-quality level water, but also the natural“green lump” of Zixing city.

Huangcao where is the core landscape of Dongjiang lake is famous as “town of Yangtz river and flower of Dongiang lake”. A slogan called “placing ten thousands of net cages in Dongjiang lake” was once very popular in Huangcao town in the 1990s’. The fishes cultivated by the net cages were the key wealth sources of local people. But in order to protect Dongjiang Lake, those thousands of net cages were picked up from the lake in 2011.

Huang Cunhui who was once the farmer handled the biggest net cage business there said to the reporters, it was with very low cost to cultivate high quality fishes in net cages in Dongjiang lake, but it can be sold with very high price. During that time, the annual income for this industry was over one million yuan, that was why they were not willing to pick up the cages from the lake when government placed the order at the very first beginning.

The government staffs visited his home for many times and taught him about the pollution of cultivation of fishes in the lake, so he finally agreed to pick up all the cages there with the subsidies of 80yuan/square meter. Assisted with the training project handled out by local government, Huang founded a food company with his friends.

10,901square meters net cages of Huangcao town were picked up from Dongjiang Lake.

Some fishermen and forest workers quite their earlier job for the same reason as protection of Dongjiang Lake. Tang Yuhui who operated a wood processing plant near Dongjiang Lake closed his plant in 2011.

Tang started new business of rural home inn now.

Many measures as net cage, afforestation, mine recovery, comprehensive disposal of refusal, and etc. were carried out by Zixing city to upgrade the water quality of Dongjiang Lake. Till now, the forest coverage rate of Huangcao town hit 86% and it regained the award as “national ecological town”.

Furthermore, though 80million yuan financial revenue would be lost from closing the coal mines and some other melting enterprises near Dongjiang Lake, Zixing city insisted to close them to protect Dongjiang Lake. Now, 96 indexes of the water of Dongjiang Lake met national first-class drinking water standards, so no purification processes required, the water of Dongjiang Lake can drink directly.

When reporters traveled around small Dongjiang river landscape, it just liked traveling in a landscape painting. Some cycling fans rode their bikes in the channels as well.

Sanxiangsishui- tourism & culture street of Dongjiang lake where was located in the entrance of Dongjiang Lake landscape was used to be a flood trench suffered with mountain torrent disasters. But now, it became a landscape of water culture.

According to the data, 5.99million visitors in domestic and abroad were received by Zixing city in 2013, which helped to gain 3.876billion yuan of tourism revenue.

Thanks to the treatment of water and environment condition, Dongjiang Lake was upgraded to be pilot city of national ecological environment protection, and Zixing city was established as national ecological demonstration zone and Hunan provincial ecological civilization city.
