Brief Introduction of Feitian Mountain National Geological Park

The 110square meters big Feitian mountain is located in Suxian district of Chenzhou city where is about 15kms away from Chenzhou urban area. Feitian mountain is with great reputation since the great traveler Xu Xiake praised it as “even small piece of land is beautiful, even small mountain is splendid” and carved the Chinese characters“寸土佳丽”(pronounces as Cuntujiali and means small piece of land is beautiful and splendid) on it. The summits of mountains are linked together, the ravines and gullies lay there horizontally and vertically, water and mountain embrace it, villages decorate the area, all of which enable Feitian mountain to be wonderful and magnificent. The scenery of Cuijiang river is even comparable with Lijiang river scenery, so it is famous as “small Guiling”.

1. Historical figures

The source of Feitian mountain was related with Yujiazhai where was named as Yunqiu mountain. It is with high, risky and splendid mountain and considered as treasure land. Some monks built a temple with the name of Feitian Temple in an unknown time. Many believers visited flooded there every year, Yunqiu mountain was named as Feitian mountain then. In 1996, Suxian district began to develop the Danxia landform along banks of Cuijiang river and Chenjiang river. In order to entitle the scenery with a brilliant name, the staffs checked local history and well learned local cultures, and finally named it as Feitian mountain. Leader’s inscription, experts’ planning, media’s propaganda, and some other public activities were carried out afterward, which greatly helped to shoot Feitian mountain to fame. On December 10, 2001, Feitian mountain was approved as national geological park by the State Land and Resources Bureau. An inaugurating ceremony was held in September 2002 and Chenzhou Feitian Mountain Ecological Tourism Festival was handled out at the same time. Its resource integration work has been fully finished in 2011.

2. Traffic and geography

Feitian Mountain National Geological Park is located in the northeast of Chenzhou city, Hunan province. The area of the park is about 66square kilometers covers three towns as Wulipai town, Xujiadong town and Qiaokou town of Suxian district. It is just 15kms away from Chenzhou urban area which is granted with very convenient transportation condition. Its west entrance is connected with Jingzhu expressway (G4) and G107 national road; its southeast exit is connected with S322 Hunan provincial road and Wuzi expressway is past via the north area of the park; and Chenzhou Avenue, Chenyong Avenue and tourism undertaking highways are direct to the park. Besides those, all the stations (exits) of Jingguan railway, Wuguang high speed train and Xiarong expressway set for Chenzhou city are just about 20munites drive to the park.

3. Landscape features

Feitian mountain is a flowing landscape painting: 66square kilometers splendid Danxia landform, 48 valleys, 9 villages, 4 tans, 3 temples, 2 rivers and one hot spring are available there. The extreme skills of the nature are shown there incisively and vividly: fantastic rock, successive peaks, alpine steppe, sleepy beauty, longevity hill, buddha-stage, ancient lanes and trees, one-thousand-meter valley, green bamboo, calm river water, ships and etc. Such beautiful scenery looks like a painting, even Xu Xiake- the great traveler of Ming Dynasty who traveled around China could not help praising it as “even small piece of the land is beautiful.” According to the features of Danxia landform, general topography, formation lithology and current protection and development condition, the park was divided into 7 sceneries as Maowangzhai scenery, Fengxingshan-Shenxianzhai scenery, Gaoyiling-Jiulongshuizhai scenery, Tiedingzhai scenery, Laohuzhai scenery, Yujiazhai scenery and Cuijiang river scenery.
