From last winter to this spring, finance departments at city and county levels in Chenzhou invested more than 200 million yuan into the greening program for the seven vertical and three horizontal arterial highways running through the city. Up to the end of March, 70% of the total 1370 kilometer traffic arteries have been lined with trees.
In order to achieve the afforestation target, forestry departments at the city and county levels replanted the sparsely forested woodland and planted trees on the waste land. Actions were taken to return sloping farmland to forest. Exposed rocks were blasted and replaced with earth for tree planting, said Shao Changkui, head of the Chenzhou Municipal Forestry Bureau.
It was revealed that the whole program will be fulfilled during the first half of this year. Saplings on the newly afforested land are expected to grow into shady trees under careful protection and cultivation in two years.
