Ancient Site Discovered in Chenzhou

2011-06-19

A 6,000-year-old site was discovered at Liujia Village, Yinhe Town in Guiyang County, Chenzhou City. Some rubbish dumps including construction waste and pottery debris with diversified decorative patterns were unearthed. Guo Weimin, head of the Hunan Provincial Archaeological Research Institute said these pottery debris revealed the age of this site, the only such site ever found in southern Hunan.

Mr. Guo added that such pottery debris is rather common along Dongting Lake. This discovery thus indicated the close cultural connection between Guiyang and Dongting Lake in ancient times, providing important references for the research of the relationship between the middle reach of the Yangtze River and South of the Fiver Ridges (referring to the area of Guangdong and Guangxi provinces) as well as the route of the cultural spread along the middle reach of the Yangtze River.
