On May 31, the propaganda activity of 25th “World No Tobacco Day” was held in Xiangnan University Subsidiary Hospital. Display boards were set on the site. Some staffs of the community sanitary service center dispatched the smoking control brochures to the passers-by to popularize the common sense of no smoking.
Citizens actively participated in this no tobacco day activities. One of the citizen said to the journalist: “Hope the smokers become less and less because the passive smoking is even more hazardous than the first smoking.” The principal of Chenzhou sanitary bureau remarked that the public places such as medical institutions, schools, administration department, enterprises, hotels, supermarkets, restaurants, station hall, cinema, etc. should be fully no-smoking.
The theme of this year's day is tobacco industry interference. It was disclosed by Ministry of Health's report on the health consequences of smoking in China that more teenagers involved in smoking, and many people were not aware of the tobacco consequences and had many misunderstandings on smoking. Tobacco use is one of the leading preventable causes of death. The global tobacco epidemic kills nearly 6 million people each year, of which more than 600,000 are people exposed to second-hand smoke. Unless we act, it will kill up to 8 million people by 2030, of which more than 80% will live in low- and middle-income countries.
World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on May 31.It is meant to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption across the globe. The day is further intended to draw global attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative health effects, which currently lead to 5.4 million deaths worldwide annually. The member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) created World No Tobacco Day in 1987. In the past twenty years, the day has been met with both enthusiasm and resistance across the globe from governments, public health organizations, smokers, growers, and the tobacco industry.
