It was reported that 80 billion pairs of disposable chopsticks were annually produced in China which was equivalent to cut 20 million 20-year old trees every year. Bo Guangxin- the NPC delegate and the Director of Jilin Sengong Group who was concerned about the forest resources for long term felt so sorry about the waste of forest resources for the production of disposable chopsticks.

It was introduced by Bo that One 20-year tree can be only produced 4000 pairs of disposable chopsticks. The 80 billion pairs of disposable chopsticks annually produced in China can be used to cover 365 Tiananmen Square. Though some policies had been released by the state to confine the production and usage of disposable chopsticks to protect the ecological environment and forest resources, the disposable chopsticks is still with considerable demand for Chinese people’s unique eating habit.

Bo also stated that in order to solve the waste problem of disposable chopsticks, on one hand, Chinese people should change the consumption habit to carry the tableware with them and the restaurant should stop the provision of disposable chopsticks; on the other hand, the alternative product of disposable chopsticks should be developed gradually.

As introduced by Bo, one of the Jilin companies has been developed one technology to produce the disposable chopsticks with some other raw material. If such kind of scientific achievement can be transformed into practical production, it would be a revolution for the disposable chopsticks and would be greatly helpful for the environmental protection and forest resources protection.
