‘Toilet revolution’ brings better life in Dawangzhai Village

2021-07-30

In recent years, Dawangzhai Village in Tangdong Subdistrict of Zixing City has taken solid measures to improve the rural living environment, such as toilet revolution, treatment of domestic waste and sewage. Its rural toilet improvement model was recognized at the national rural toilet revolution conference.

Liao Wailin is the sanitation worker of Dawangzhai village. He starts to clean the five public toilets in the village from 6:00 am every day. In addition to the public toilets, Liao is also responsible for the environmental health and garden care.

Since 2017, Liao Wailin has been employed as the sanitation worker of the village. He was sent to learn skills such as landscaping and pest control. Under his care, the village has become more and more beautiful.

"When the village is clean, others and I will be in a comfortable mood," said Liao Wailin.

Dawangzhai Village used to be a poor village because of impassable roads and low food production. "In the past, all the toilets were piled up with red rocks, and then covered with some thatch. At that time, the villagers had a very difficult life, not to mention building a good toilet," said Li Jianxin, a villager from Dawangzhai Village.

With the completion of Zixing-Wulipai Highway and Chenzhou Avenue, Dawangzhai Village has become accessible. With the participation of local villagers, special funds, government investment and social support, the village has demolished more than 40,000 square meters of dilapidated houses, built 162 new houses, constructed squares and parking lots, and renovated the tap water project.

At the same time, the village has been actively promoting the toilet revolution. It has dismantled more than 600 old toilets covering an area of more than 6,000 square meters, established five public toilets, and encouraged villagers to carry out toilet renovation. It also installed sedimentation tanks for each household, and the used sewage is transported to the rural domestic sewage treatment facility through the underground sewage collection network. The treated water quality meets the "Emission Standards for Water Pollutants from Rural Domestic Sewage Treatment Facilities in Hunan Province".

"Our village is built on rocks, so it is very difficult to build a septic tank, which has to be dug more than two meters deep with a blasting machine," said Cao Meihua, Party branch Secretary and Director of Dawangzhai Village.

In addition, Zixing City introduced the "measures of operation and maintenance management of domestic sewage treatment facilities" for each village and township, which grants each sewage treatment facility an annual operation and management fee of 5,000 yuan. Now, villagers have moved into single-family houses, and many of them have set up farmhouses, attracting more and more tourists.

"As the environment becomes beautiful, clean and tidy, there are more tourists coming to our village. It is a good choice to develop eco-tourism and open farmhouses, which can bring an income of tens of thousands of dollars every month," said Li Jianxin.

"In the future, we will continue to maintain a long-term management mechanism, and make efforts to improve the civilization, promote industrial development and eco-tourism, so that the village will be more livable and affluent," said Cao Meihua.
