“My dream is to develop the high-quality green agriculture products,” said Fan Xiaoming, president of Yanyu Farmers Cooperative.
To realize this dream, there must be industrial support.
With the high altitude, pleasant climate and sufficient water, Changxi Village, Lutang Town, Beihu District provides a suitable environment for the cultivation of edible mushrooms.
“Due to the favorable environment, our mushrooms such as oyster mushrooms are very popular,” said a villager.
But these agricultural products didn’t achieve large-scale planting, so there is no brand which has been created nor much revenue brought to the villagers.
In 2016, Fan Xiaoming invested 2 million yuan in cooperation with 10 shareholders, transferred 22 mu (about 1.46 hectares) of land and began to plant edible mushrooms, hoping to develop the edible mushroom industry together with villagers by building a demonstration base.
After one year, their effort paid off. “In the first year, we produced more than 150,000 kilograms of mushrooms, with an output value of more than 1.5 million yuan,” Fan said with a smile.
Seeing that, the local farmers began to join him.
“The cooperative buys mushrooms at the guarantee price of 10 yuan a kilogram,” Fan said. The cooperative has driven more than 50 villagers to plant edible mushrooms so far, with an annual income increase of more than 3,000 yuan per person. At the same time, the cooperative also established a benefit coupling mechanism with poverty-relief households in the Nanxi area, and each household could receive an annual dividend of 16,000 yuan.
Industrial development is in full swing, and the villagers are getting richer. But Fan Xiaoming has another goal to develop the industry better.
With this goal in mind, in 2019, Fan Xiaoming started his inspection tour of Japan. In this tour, he was surprised to learn that Japanese high-end agricultural products do not use any pesticides, fertilizers and chemicals, and the organic matter of the land reaches 30%.
Now, Fan Xiaoming has a new goal: plant organic mushrooms. “At present, we grow edible mushrooms without using any chemicals to ensure that they are safe, green and healthy,” Fan Xiaoming said. They will also build a mushroom processing base, where the mushrooms can be dried and packaged directly, thus helping extend the industrial chain, increase the added value of the products, and bring more income to the villagers.
In the greenhouse, rows of mushrooms were neatly placed on the shelves. Fan Xiaoming said, “our environment is no worse than others, and I believe this dream will come true soon.”
