Linwu opera performers inherit national spirit

2022-08-02

As an important part of the spiritual life of the Chinese nation, opera guards and inherits our root and spirit. The opera cultural ecology of Linwu County has revitalized again since the reform and opening up of China.

Since the establishment of Hunan opera cultural ecology conservation (experimental) zone, Linwu has adhered to cultural confidence, creative inheritance and innovative development, and forged ahead to promote traditional opera and inherit the basic national spirit, composing a beautiful and touching song of spirit.

There are more than 10 kinds of operas in Linwu, including Nuo Opera and Qiyang Opera, and many operas become more vigorous after undergoing the test of time.

In front of the dresser, the performers put on make-up and get dressed up.

With the sounds of musical instruments, they stand on the stage and immediately come into the play, trying to make their singing, reciting and fake fighting seem reasonable in the play.

As the saying goes, “one minute on the stage needs ten years’ practice off stage”, the opera performers, whether old or young, on the stage or behind the stage, keep practicing hard for perfect performance on the stage, which always makes the audience deeply touched.

As the 16th-generation inheritor, Wang Taibao started to learn Nuo Opera in the early 1980s and undertook the main tasks of sorting, protection and inheritance of the opera. He inherited Nuo Opera from his father and carried it forward to the next generation.

After several years of training, he created a three-step inheritance model for the old, middle-aged and young people, with numerous outstanding performers.

At present, though the means of entertainment are increasingly diversified, the audience of traditional opera become fewer and people learning opera are rare.

In recent years, the local government has attached great importance to the historical and cultural development of traditional opera and considered the diversified traditional operas with distinctive features as the foundation of historical and spiritual culture.

By integrating the inheritance and protection of opera culture with the charm of the ancient county and its modern image, the cultural tourism brand of “thousand-year-old county” and the development and planning of cultural tourism, Linwu County has seen the development of opera culture in an all-round way, with opera performance being more well-received, promoted and spread and the opera being respected, studied and inherited due to sufficient input of material resources, manpower, finance and others.

Wu Zejun, a researcher of Linwu Opera culture, said that more parents are encouraging their children to learn Linwu traditional opera. Six sessions of children opera training have been held over these years, including the Youth Class of Nuo Opera, the Youth Class of Qiyang Opera, with about two or three hundred students participating in the training.

Meanwhile, according to the characteristics of children, the training schools and opera troupes also had a rehearsal of Nuo Opera and Qiyang Opera programs designed for children, providing many platforms and means to enrich children’s art life.

The cultural ecology of Linwu Opera, with a time-honored historical background and profound social foundation, fully manifests the spirit of the local people. Over these years, many opera troupes at community levels have braved the relatively tough conditions and stuck to traditional art, showing their social responsibilities to inherit the national spirit.
