Hunan’s forest coverage rate up to 59.97%

Recently, the Publicity Department of the Hunan Provincial Party Committee held a press conference on the achievements of ecological civilization construction in Hunan.

 

In the past ten years, the Forestry Department of Hunan Province has focused on land greening, forest city construction, ecological corridor construction and other actions, and implemented a number of governance, restoration, protection and construction projects, providing green ecological support for the construction of beautiful Hunan.
 
29.309 million mu(19,539.33 square kilometers) of forests have been planted, 26.309 million mu(17,539.33 square kilometers) of hills closed for reforestation, 18.528 million mu(12,352 square kilometers) of degraded forests restored, tending of 74.646 million mu(49,764 square kilometers) of forests completed, and 1.451 million mu(967.33 square kilometers) of wetlands restored.
 
The forest coverage has increased from 57.34% to 59.97% in the province, the forest stock volume has grown increased from 429 million cubic meters to 641 million cubic meters, the comprehensive grassland vegetation coverage has risen from 84.2% to 86.3%, and the wetland protection rate has been up from 50.16% to 70.54%.
 
There are 1,045 species of vertebrates and 6,186 species of vascular plants in the province. The protection rate of the species of terrestrial wild animals and plants under national key protection has reached 82.9%. The damage rate of forest fires has been stably controlled within 0.9‰, and forest pest infestation rate controlled below the 3.3‰ as stipulated by the state. 1 international wetland city, 8 “national forest cities” and 14 “Hunan forest cities” have been established, and the green coverage rate of villages in the province has reached 64.2%.
 
At the same time, Hunan has accelerated the development of a protected natural area system with national parks as the main body.
 
In the past ten years, it has built 1 world geopark, 1 pilot area of national park system, 55 nature reserves, 11 scenic areas, 37 forest parks, 54 wetland parks, 12 geological parks, 15 stone desert parks, and 2 grassland parks. There are 582 protected natural areas of various types in the province, including 12 types of world natural heritage, world geological parks, and nature reserves. The total area accounts for 11.27% of the province’s land area.
