As the water level of the main canal rises, the clear water begins to flow out from the water outlet. In Luotang Village, Tangshi Town, Guiyang County, Hunan Province, Li Chengyou, Party secretary of Luotang Village, and Zhou Shiguang, a grain grower, were busy clearing the barriers of the irrigation canal for the water to flow into the field.
The water comes from the Xianjiang reservoir more than 10 kilometers away. Over the past few days, the local government of Guiyang county has played the role of major water sources including 7 medium-sized irrigation areas such as Fangyuan and Xiaojiashan and 249 small reservoirs to ensure the regular irrigation of about 417,900 mu (27,860 hectares) of late rice in the county through comprehensive measures such as increasing the discharge flow and water diversion.
Zhou Shiguang plants more than 400 mu (about 26.7 hectares) of rice. Some time ago, it was the time when water was needed for rice booting. However, affected by the drought, there was less water in the field. Fortunately, the water from the Xianjiang Reservoir flowed through various irrigation canals and relieved the drought in the rice fields.
Xianjiang Reservoir is one of the major water sources for agricultural production in northern Guiyang county. The total length of its main and branch canals is 97.6 kilometers. Precision irrigation covers about 30,000 mu (2,000 hectares) of farmland in Tangshi, Sili and Liufeng towns.
Since July, 256 water sources in Guiyang county have provided 46.937 million cubic meters of water for downstream people’s life and agricultural irrigation.
At the same time, the basic role of irrigation areas and rural water supply projects has been continuously brought into play. Now, the water supply capacity of various irrigation areas in the county is 117.565 million cubic meters.
