Rice harvested in terraced fields

2022-09-12

Since the beginning of autumn, the rice in the 100-hectare fields at Huangcen Village, Yizhang County has begun to turn yellow.

While farmers are busy harvesting rice, the layered terraced fields have also attracted many tourists to come here and feel the joy of rice harvest.

Huangcen Village is a hilly and mountainous area with an average altitude of more than 600 meters. In the terraced fields, the rice ears are plump and drooping.

Due to the different height and size of the fields, the villagers can only rely on manual rice harvesting in fine weather to get every grain in the granary. Yan Zhigao, a 72-year-old villager, has been a farmer all his life.

After his children got married and settled in the city, he and his wife worked hard to cultivate the more than 3 mu(0.2 hectares) of rice fields at hometown.

“In the past, we had to feed cattle and watch them when they were ploughing the fields. Now we use farming machines instead, which is much more convenient,” said Yan Zhigao. “I hope young people can often go home to see how the rice is grown and harvested.”

Golden rice fields and villages and forests, which look like a natural palette, complement each other. In every harvest season, the rice in the thousands of hectares of terraced fields smells fragrant, presenting manual harvesting and grains sifting and other farming scenes, attracting many tourists to experience farming and do sightseeing.

Huangcen Village has a long history of rice cultivation in terraced fields, and local villagers have cultivated rice in the terraced fields for generations. The local authorities will give full play to the geographical advantage of closing to the county, rely on the scenery of alpine terraces to create unique brands such as terrace sightseeing tours and farming experience tours, provide delicious farmhouse dishes, vigorously develop rural tourism and help villagers increase their income.
