In recent days, 46,000 mu (3,066.67 hectares) of polygonatum odoratum in Guiyang County has reaped a bumper harvest. The development model of “Party branch + cooperative + base + farmer” allows the polygonatum odoratum grown in the county to be sold at home and abroad.
In the fields of Heping Town, Guiyang County, the farmers were busy removing the soil from the surface and bagging the polygonatum odoratum. The fresh polygonatum odoratum is transported to the cooperative for drying and packaging.
“We divide the polygonatum odoratum into three categories according to its size and appearance. The best polygonatum odoratum can be sold for 74 yuan per kilogram in the market. At present, our polygonatum odoratum is in short supply in the market,” said Zhu Aimin, head of Kangmin Specialized Cooperative of Medicinal Materials in Guiyang County.
Polygonatum odoratum has the effect of nourishing Yin to moisten dryness and promoting the production of body fluid to relieve thirst. As the soil of Heping Town has good quality and high humidity, it is suitable for the growth of traditional Chinese medicinal herbs.
In recent years, through the new development model, the farmers of various villages in the county have developed the industry in groups, leading to steady improvement of both the quality and output of polygonatum odoratum. Much of the polygonatum odoratum has already been ordered before harvesting.
With various links of the industrial chain such as land transfer, purchase orders and employment of enterprises organically combined, many surplus rural laborers have been employed and their income has also increased.
This year, Guiyang County has planted 46,000 mu (3,066.67 hectares) of polygonatum odoratum, with an annual output of 70,000 tons and an output value of over 900 million yuan, enabling more than 10,000 farmers to increase their income.
