After the beginning of winter, the vegetable fields in Yangmeishan Town of Yizhang County were a hive of activity, with exuberant hardy vegetables entering the harvest season.
“Today we are expected to pick 1,000 to 1,500 kilograms of vegetables, which will reach markets of Chenzhou at 2 pm by trucks departing at 1 pm. Next morning, residents can eat these fresh vegetables,” said a farmer named Yang Shouyi brimming over with smile. He was busy in picking, selecting, sorting and loading flowering Chinese cabbage with a dozen farmers. As a veteran vegetable farmer, Yang Shouyi plants over 50 mu (3.33 hectares) of vegetables in his fields. He also purchases vegetables from local farmers and sells them to the wholesale markets of Chenzhou.
With an average altitude of 550 meters, Pinghedong Village boasts more than 2,800 mu (186.67 hectares) of fertile lands and features a large difference in temperature between day and night. Such favorable conditions are conducive to the growth of vegetables and the development of vegetable industry.
In recent years, villages nearby Pinghedong Village have taken advantage of rural revitalization and adopted the mode of “company + base + farmers”.
Vegetables planted in September when rice is reaped can be harvested and sold at the beginning of winter. Thanks to Xiamen-Chengdu Expressway, vegetables from Pinghedong Village can reach cities across China.
