Villager raises ducks to get rid of poverty

2022-12-08

On December 2, Cao Xiao’an from a poor household at Dongqiao Village, Huawang Township, Anren County, watched a swarm of ducks swimming in the pond, saying in excitement, “These ducks will definitely sell for a good price.”

In order to increase his family’s income, Cao Xiao’an contracted a fish pond in 2021, but the low interest could barely maintain the basic living of his family.

At the beginning of this year, when Cao Xiao’an hesitated about whether to be a migrant worker, the rural revitalization team made up officers from Anren County Tax Bureau and the members of Dongqiao Village Committee together planned a new way for him to make money — to establish a Linwu duck breeding base through cooperation with Hunan Linwu Shunhua Duck Industry Development Co., Ltd.. And the ducks would be purchased by the company after growing up.

Even though there were good projects and sales channels, Cao Xiao’an was still faced with financial and technical problems because of a large amount of capital needs for the construction of an indoor breeding base and the purchase of ducklings.

For Cao Xiao’an, who has to support a big family, it was hard to solve the problems even if he took out all his savings.

After knowing Cao Xiao’an’s concerns, the members of the rural revitalization team visited him several times to help him analyze the risks, and also took him to the bank for detailed consultation on loan matters.

Finally, with the joint efforts of Dongqiao Village Committee, the rural revitalization team and other parties, Cao Xiao’an borrowed 200,000 yuan from Anren County Rural Commercial Bank, which solved the funding problems.

Considering that Cao Xiao’an did not have rich experience in duck breeding, the members of the rural revitalization team invited technicians from Anren County Animal Husbandry Bureau to provide him with face-to-face professional guidance.

With the help of all parties, Cao Xiao’an’s Linwu Duck Breeding Base was officially opened on April 20 this year, and 5,000 ducklings were purchased. However, Cao Xiao’an lost 1,200 ducklings in May due to the improper adjustment of the  temperature in the newly built greenhouse.

In the face of this situation, Cao Xiao’an was flustered for raising ducks was much more difficult than he thought. How could he repay the loan when he lost money at the beginning of business?

At this time, the team helped him again. They invited technicians to find the cause of the death of the ducklings, conduct scientific research again on environmental factors such as temperature and feed, and formulate a new breeding plan.

Cao Xiao’an, who regained confidence, bought another 2,000 ducklings. In July, Hunan Linwu Shunhua Duck Industry Development Co., Ltd. purchased the first batch of Linwu ducks from him. Cao Xiao’an obtained a net profit of 20,000 yuan, and finally gained the joy of harvest.
