Farmers were busy picking vegetables in a vegetable base in Sanhe Village, Huatang Town, Beihu District, Chenzhou City.

“This base covers an area of 360 mu (24 hectares). We have 10 such bases in the city, including more than 4,000 mu (about 267 hectares) of vegetable planting bases with joint operation and more than 1,500 mu (100 hectares) of bases under our direct operation,” said Wang Tingwu, proudly, the head of Chenzhou Zhongzhi Huinong Agricultural Development Company.
Wang Tingwu was born in 1981, and influenced by his father, he began to engage in agricultural production at the age of 20. After planting tobacco in Guangdong Province for more than ten years, in 2012, Wang Tingwu chose to return home and started planting vegetables.
Different from people’s understanding of traditional agriculture, Wang Tingwu realized that high technology would play a key role in large-scale agricultural production.
When talking about the way to grow and sell vegetables, Wang Tingwu said: “My father and his generation grew vegetables relying on the weather. Now, various facilities and technology allow us to grow vegetables all the year round, and the quality of vegetables is also good. They are very popular in the market. And every day, fresh green vegetables are sold to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.”
Now, Wang Tingwu’s “vegetable kingdom” is growing stronger, and Chenzhou Zhongzhi Huinong Agricultural Development Company has become a leading enterprise for agricultural industrialization in Chenzhou, a “vegetable basket” base for the GBA, and a base of the public brand “Xiangjiangyuan”.
The vegetable planting area has been expanded to more than 1,500 mu (100 hectares), extending from Sanhe Village to surrounding villages like Shishantou Village, Wushan Village and Yangtianhu Township. Villagers nearby call Wang Tingwu the “vegetable king”.
His original intention of returning to his hometown to start a business is not only to get rich, but also to bring hard-working villagers to get rich. Through the model bringing together the company, cooperatives and farmers, the seedlings, technology, agricultural materials, sales and brands can be provided in a unified way, driving more than 2,000 farmers to increase income and enabling rural revitalization.
Industrial development turns farmers into agricultural workers. “We can find a stable job near our home, so that rural land can create greater value and farmers can increase income.” Qiu Pingjie from Shishantou Village working in Wang’s vegetable base can get an average monthly salary of 4,000 yuan. There are more than 100 villagers like Qiu Pingjie.
Led by Wang Tingwu, Sanhe Village, Shishantou Village and Wushan Village have become famous professional vegetable planting bases in Huatang Town and even in Beihu District. The local people are now living a better-off life.
This year, Wang Tingwu’s vegetable base was approved as a provincial modern agricultural characteristic industrial park, and got a subsidy of 1 million yuan. The supporting policies make Wang Tingwu full of hope for the future.
