Chinese milk vetch and oilseed rape fertilize land

2023-04-13

On April 10, a large area of Chinese milk vetch and cole flowers were blooming in the terraced fields in Heye Town, Guiyang County.

Deng Longying, an official of the Bureau of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Guiyang County, was instructing farmers to plough the land to improve its fertility. Farmers were driving agricultural machines to turn over the oilseed rape and Chinese milk vetch into the soil. They will become important nutritional sources for rice cultivation in this field.

The roots of Chinese milk vetch have the effect of nitrogen fixation, which can release nitrogen nutrients into the soil. The roots, stems and leaves of oilseed rape can increase soil fertility. Growing the two green manure plants can reduce the chemical fertilizer by 20% to 40% and increase the yield of rice by 25-50 kg per mu (about 0.067 hectares).

Heye Town used to be a typical “old mining area” with relatively low land efficiency. In recent years, the local government has implemented the mode of “land improvement plus ecology plus agriculture” and planted Chinese milk vetch and oilseed rape in a mixed way to increase the yield of rice.

In the past, Tan Jiuban, a farmer, opened up wasteland to cultivate rice with a low yield. After the construction of high-standard farmland, the agricultural department provided him with the seeds of Chinese milk vetch and oilseed rape for free to improve the quality of soil and reduce the cost of planting.

In recent years, Guiyang County has vigorously promoted the cultivation of green manure crops to reduce the chemical fertilizer, improve the overall grain production capability and increase farmers’ income.
