On April 20, a wall painter was painting on a wall in Qili Old Street, Qili Village, Huilongshan Yao Township, Zixing City. The painting, which is nearing completion, depicts three old men in the mountains drinking wine and playing a stringed instrument with great joy. Wall paintings like this cover a total of 2,845 square meters on the Qili Old Street.
On the Qili Old Street, the widened cement road is clean and flat, and the villagers’ houses are surrounded by fences, inside which there are small vegetable patches. The renovated old houses are hung with red lanterns. Just a year ago, however, this place was in a state of dilapidation.
Qili Old Street was originally a century old market in Zixing City, with a length of 670 meters, and it was a bustling place decades ago. After the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Qili People’s Commune was set up on the street, and some collective activities and performances such as opera were often held here.
With the change of time, the old street gradually lost its former glamour with its fading gates, failing tiles, barren gardens and potholed roads, and the local people also drifted away from the old street.
In 2022, with the support of the city government, the village sought for policy and funds, as well as raised money from its villagers for the quality improvement and renovation of Qili Old Street Highway in August 2022.
Up to now, a total construction area of 5,828.26 square meters has been vacated after demolition of dangerous and old buildings.
Three small recreation squares and nine small vegetable gardens have been built, more than 800 meters of ditches and 1,200 meters of pipelines have been cleaned, more than 3,000 square meters of flowers and plants have been planted, 16 street lamps have been installed, and 57 old houses have been repaired.
The old street has taken on a new look, which received unanimous praise from the local people.
