Pumpkins help rural revitalization of Nanchong Village

In recent years, various villages (communities) in Linwu County have taken great efforts to develop their own characteristic industries for “one village, one product”. Nanchong Village, Shunfeng Town, has intensely developed the pumpkin industry and continuously introduced new varieties based on the market demand. The expanding industry has laid a solid foundation for the rural revitalization of Nanchong Village.
At the pumpkin planting base in Nanchong Village, more than 30 farmers were busy planting pumpkin seedlings. This year is the second year for planting taro pumpkins in the village. Last year, due to the bad climate, the yield of taro pumpkins significantly decreased. This year, the village decided to expand the planting area from 300 mu (20 hectares) to 500 mu (about 33 hectares).
The local cooperative has reached agreements with enterprises for product export, and introduced a new variety of QQ pumpkin from Taiwan. Compared with the taro pumpkin, the QQ pumpkin tastes sweeter and has longer storage time due to its thick skin.
Nowadays, the pumpkin base can offer over 100 odd jobs for local villagers every day. At the same time, the cooperation method of “village collective+farmers+enterprises” allows the village and villagers to enjoy the dividends of the pumpkin industry.
Hu Jinchun, Party secretary and director of Nanchong Village, said that the land in the village has been transferred for the cultivation of taro pumpkin, through which villagers are able to receive an annual rent of about 300 yuan per mu (about 0.067 hectares). At the same time, the village committee bought shares with cash to strengthen the collective economy of the village.
Nanchong Village plans to plant two batches of pumpkins this year, which will be available on the market in June and October respectively. It is expected that the output value will double that of last year.
The village will further expand the planting scale and cultivate a group of pumpkin growers, letting pumpkins grow a cash cow for villagers.
