In recent days, five ministries and commissions including the National Development and Reform Commission announced the fourth batch of demonstration parks for the integrated development of rural industries, among which Guidong County was shortlisted as it has modernized and scaled local agriculture through the establishment of complete industry chains for Chinese medicinal crops, tea, and Moso bamboo.
Guidong County boasts over 20 million bamboo plants with the cultivated area reaching 152,900 mu (about 10,193 hectares). By leveraging the rich bamboo resources, it has been turbocharging the development of Moso bamboo cultivation and deep processing through approaches like establishing factories in villages, integrating planting and marketing, and diversifying product portfolios. The move aims to help villagers find jobs and boost incomes in places close to their homes, tapping into the invaluable assets that lush mountains and clear waters hold.
In the bustling workshop of Zhongyi Zhumu, more than 30 workers race against time to turn bamboo into outdoor applications such as heavy boards and garden landscapes. Based on the business model of bases and cooperatives, Zhongyi Zhumu has successively set up six raw material processing sites, contributing to more than 500 new jobs. In 2022, the company spent more than 15 million yuan purchasing Moso bamboo, achieving a production value of over 80 million yuan, thereby injecting a strong impetus into the local economy.
Over recent years, Guidong County has been using projects as a ladder to boost the bamboo industry and plump farmers’ wallets. Additionally, it has paid equal attention to ecological conservation and promoted forest well-being tourism through bamboo eco-landscaping to consolidate the achievements of poverty alleviation and advance rural revitalization.
