Currently, in Dayuan Village, Huangsha Town, Yizhang County, Chenzhou City, the Luohan fruit in the 50-mu (3.33-hectare) plantation has entered the flowering and fruiting stage, which is also a critical period for artificial pollination of Luohan fruit.
Farmers can be seen busy under the fruit racks, manually pollinating the flowers to increase the yield. The flowering period of Luohan fruit is very short, so timely pollination is necessary to improve the fruit-setting rate.
In recent days, more than a dozen college and high school students who have returned to their hometown in Dayuan Village spontaneously formed a youth volunteer service team. They went to the Luohan fruit plantation base in Dayuan Village and joined the team of flower pollinators for Luohan fruit. Their aim was to alleviate the production pressure for the growers and contribute to the development of the Luohan fruit industry.
In the early morning, the students had their breakfast early and arrived at the Luohan fruit base wearing sun hats. After carefully studying and mastering the pollination techniques, they immediately put them into practice by manually pollinating the flowers. They made the pollen from the male flowers onto the female flowers to improve the fruit-setting rate and quality of the Luohan fruit.
Li Huiling, a college student, wiped off her sweat and said, “During this summer vacation, through practical work, we not only learn about the knowledge and methods of Luohan fruit pollination but also experience the hard work of the fruit farmers. It is not easy for the fruit trees to grow healthily and bear sweet fruits.”
Luohan fruit flowers bloom in the early morning and it is the best time to pollinate them around 9 a.m. They wither in the afternoon, so it is necessary to gently transfer the pollen from the male flowers to the stigma of the female flowers with a stick. The students made full use of the few hours in the early morning to pollinate all the flowers that bloom on that day. This saved much labor time for the growers.
“Now is the busy season for farming, and there is a shortage of labor in rural areas. Thanks to the help of the students, otherwise, with so many blooming flowers, it would be impossible to keep up,” said Li Siqing, the grower, with a smile. “In the past two years, the government has provided us with favorable policies for developing Luohan fruit cultivation. During the busy farming season, we can also receive agricultural support services. This has strengthened my determination to grow and expand the Luohan fruit successfully.”
In recent years, Dayuan Village has actively adjusted its industrial structure and vigorously developed the cultivation of Luohan fruit, which has been identified as one of the important industries to consolidate and expand the achievements in poverty alleviation and rural revitalization.
