In Guiyang County, abandoned riverbanks have become leisure destinations for camping and barbecues, while disused railways have been converted into historical and cultural corridors. These transformations are bringing a new vibrancy to rural life.
With rich history and picturesque scenery, in recent years, the region has focused on improving the rural living environment while preserving the original character of villages.
They have creatively repurposed disused facilities and materials to enhance living conditions. This approach has not only beautified the rural areas but also fostered economic growth through rural culture and tourism.
The Chenjia Old Railway and the train station in Hexie Village have been transformed into a vibrant tourism destination that combines railway and local history. Two tourism projects, Life Station and Historical Wheels, integrate the area’s rustic charm with unique attractions, including sightseeing mini-trains, agricultural experiences, and leisure activities.
This revitalization brings new life into the Chenjia Railway and provides an immersive experience for visitors.
The Historical Wheels stretches approximately 2 kilometers and is designed to harmonize with the natural terrain while respecting the local environment. It utilizes local materials and stone walls to depict Guiyang’s historical administrative divisions, highlighting the region’s cultural and agricultural history as a leisure destination.
Visitor Li Hongyan expressed deep appreciation for the transformations in Guiyang’s rural areas, which blend the past and present. She reflected on the region’s changes over time and recalled childhood memories while capturing photos.
The abandoned water pipe factory and wasteland have been converted into a stargazing camping base. Through collaborative development with local enterprises, this site has become a popular spot for camping, barbecues, and team-building activities. During festivals and holidays, the stargazing camping base welcomes a large influx of visitors.
“You can gaze at the stars, listen to the chirping of insects, feel the beauty of the mountains and countryside, and enjoy good time with family and friends. During the May Day holiday this year, more than 10,000 people visited this place every day,” said Li Zhendan, the head of the Stargazing Camping Base.
In Hexie Village, more than twenty century-old abandoned houses have been transformed to cultural and educational bases for intangible cultural heritage preservation, including the Xiang Opera and Kun Opera Traditional Culture Pavilion, Chinese Classics Hall, and Traditional Papermaking Experience Hall. These sites, once neglected, now serve as tourist attractions, enhancing the village’s appeal.
Huang Kai, the Party Secretary of Hexie Village, explained that the bustling bases and attractions have created over 200 job opportunities for local villagers.
Through self-employment in various roles, including specialty snacks, scenic area maintenance and community performances, villagers have seen an average annual income increase of over 3,000 yuan per person. This has led to improved economic prospects for the village, making it a model for beautiful village construction in Hunan.
The thriving days of Hexie Village are just a glimpse of Guiyang’s efforts to create a beautiful rural landscape, activate rural tourism, and develop an all-for-one tourism pattern.
