Recently, the National Ethnic Affairs Commission of the People’s Republic of China announced the list of the eighth batch of national demonstration areas and units for ethnic unity and progress. Among 248 awarded units, there were 19 townships and towns (subdistricts) included in the list nationwide.
Mangshan Yao Township in Yizhang County, Chenzhou City is the only township (subdistrict) in Hunan that made the list and also the first township in Chenzhou that was rated as a national demonstration unit for ethnic unity and progress.
Mangshan Yao Township was one of the first ethnic townships established in Hunan Province in 1957. There are 6 villages in the township with a total population of 9,703. The township has embarked on a new path of great unity, development, and prosperity in ethnic regions. It has won 11 national and provincial honors, such as the “National History Education Base of Care for the Next Generation” and the “pilot unit for ethnic rural revitalization in Hunan Province”.
In addition, the reform in Tiaoshizi Natural Village of Xiling Village was listed among the “100 Cases of Grassroots Reform in Hunan”, and Jiang Mengnan, a Yao girl, received the award of Person Touching China for 2021.
