Thunder bamboo shoots bring wealth to villagers

2024-03-29

Thunder bamboo shoots are so named because the bamboo shoots come out of the ground after the early spring thunders. There is a large forest area in Huatang Village, Beihu District, Chenzhou City. Thunder bamboo shoots grow well here with fertile soil and sufficient water. Thunder bamboo shoots appear on the market in early March.

Many thunder bamboo shoots sprout in the planting base of Huatang Village. After being sorted, weighed and packed, these bamboo shoots will be sent to other places of the country.

Cao Wenzhang runs an agricultural development company, and is also a major saler in the province who grows thunder bamboo shoots.

In 2023, the production capacity of his company reached 650 tons, with a total annual sales revenue of about 29 million yuan. Its products are sold to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Sichuan, Chongqing, Jiangsu, Zhejiang and Shanghai.

In the past two years, with the increase in demand, Cao Wenzhang has actively expanded the sales channels. Thunder bamboo shoots are put on shelves at Sam’s Club Supermarket, which sells about 6 tons of bamboo shoots every day. The products are also exported to overseas markets such as Japan and Singapore.

“Chenzhou is located at 25 degrees north latitude, creating a unique microclimate environment. Therefore, local bamboo produces bamboo shoots 10 to 15 days earlier than those in other places. And the natural red soil make bamboo shoots fresh and sweet. So it has advantages in quality and production time,” said Cao Wenzhang when talking about the reason for the booming sales of thunder bamboo shoots.

To guide villagers to vigorously develop the bamboo shoot industry and improve the bamboo shoot industrial chain, Cao Wenzhang adopts the development model of cooperative plus farmer plus base to promote agricultural efficiency and increase farmers’ income.

Now, there are about 3,500 mu (about 233 hectares) of thunder bamboo shoots in Beihu District. The district has the largest planting area and the highest sales volume of thunder bamboo shoots in the province, with more than 200 households engaged in planting bamboo shoots and their annual income increasing by over 4,000 yuan.
