Rows of leek flowers are lush in the village, and villagers are busy picking them.
Leeks grow in autumn and winter. The leek flowers are often picked when they are still buds and not open, and the nutritional content is high. It is rich in nutrients such as calcium, phosphorus, riboflavin, ascorbic acid, etc. It can help produce saliva, stimulate appetite, and promote digestion.
The head of the base Luo Hong introduced that now, the base can harvest over 500 kg of leek flowers, and the wholesale price is 12 yuan per kilogram. There is large demand for manual picking and weeding, which creates job opportunities for surplus labors in the village.
“Leek flowers are in short supply now, which are sold to Foshan, Shenzhen, Changsha, Chenzhou and other places. There are now 5 people working in the base, and sometimes more than 20 people.” This year is the sixth year for Luo Hong to grow leeks.
Now, with the maturity of planting technology and stable sales channels, he has transferred about 60 mu (4 hectares) of farmland to plant leeks in recent years. Next, he also plans to further expand the planting scale and help villagers increase income.
