Guidong’s efforts to promote Chinese medicinal materials

2024-06-07
Recently, villagers were busy weeding and loosening the soil in the holly root base of Wenchang Village, Shatian Town, Guidong County.

In recent years, Guidong County has been committed to the cultivation, deep processing, market and commercial circulation of traditional Chinese medicinal materials to advance its development throughout the entire chain.

It has been rated as the “Demonstration County for Planting Traditional Chinese Medicinal Material in Hunan” and the “Demonstration Base for Supply of the Provincial-level High-quality Agricultural and Sideline Products”. The traditional Chinese medicinal material resources have become a “treasure trove” for industrial development and income increase for farmers.

Ruiyuan Agriculture Co., Ltd. was established in 2018, featuring the cultivation and sales of traditional Chinese medicinal materials. Since its establishment, the company has adopted a business model of “company plus cooperative plus base plus farmers” and driven 290 households in the surrounding areas to plant traditional Chinese medicinal materials.

Currently, a demonstration planting base, a standard planting base, and a traditional Chinese medicinal material processing area have been built to cultivate traditional Chinese medical herbs such as magnolia officinalis, holly root, cimicifuga, and polygonatum sibiricum, covering an area of about 2,500 mu (about 166.67 hectares). The annual production of traditional Chinese medicinal materials is more than 1,000 tons, with a production value of over 30 million yuan.

“Guidong County attaches great importance to the development of the traditional Chinese medicinal material industry. It has provided us with financial support and technical services, such as ‘one-on-one’ on-site technical guidance services offered by relevant departments,” said Li Yongfeng, head of the company.

Zhenyuan Modern Agricultural Development Co., Ltd., located in Hankou Village, Oujiang Town, is a traditional Chinese medicinal material enterprise that integrates domestication of precious medicinal materials, full biomimetic planting, and planting, acquisition, processing, and sales of geo-authentic crude drugs.

In recent years, the company has achieved annual seed breeding and shortened the growth and production cycles of paris polyphylla by one year through technical means such as manual temperature control, humidity control, plastic film, and soil replacement, with a survival rate of over 95% for seedlings. Due to the high quality and stable supply of medicinal materials, the company has signed long-term cooperation agreements with multiple state-owned enterprises such as CR Sanjiu and Hunan Yifang Tianjiang Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.

“We plan to deeply process geo-authentic crude drugs from Guidong to increase the added value of Chinese medicinal products, and sell them across the country,” said Li Fuzhen, head of the company.

Based on favorable conditions such as excellent ecological environment, suitable climate, abundant medicinal resources, and good quality, Guidong County has planned the overall pattern of the traditional Chinese medicinal material industry, increased support, strengthened service guidance, and introduced deep processing enterprises to further extend the industrial chain and strengthen the weaknesses, in a bid to promote the high-quality development of the traditional Chinese medicinal material industry.

At the end of 2023, the county had 240,000 mu (16,000 hectares) of traditional Chinese medicinal materials, including 78 contiguous planting areas with each of over 300 mu (20 hectares), 24 large-scale planting areas with each over 1,000 mu (about 66.67 hectares), and 3 standardized seedling cultivation bases.

In 2024, the county planned to add an additional 20,000 mu (about 1333.33 hectares).

As of now, the traditional Chinese medicinal materials in Guidong County have been included in the regional public brand of “Xiang Jiu Wei”. Paris polyphylla, Rhizoma Polygonati, and Momordica grosvenorii are the first batch of licensed products by “Xiang Gan Hong”, and Rhizoma Polygonati and Momordica grosvenorii of Guidong have been approved as national geographical indication certification trademarks.

"Guidong County will expand its production scale by improving the production and operation models of the traditional Chinese medicinal material industry to extend and strengthen the industrial chain so as to promote the industrial agglomeration and development,” said Wang Cunxiong, deputy director of the Agriculture and Rural Affairs Bureau. He added that Guidong will work to build a good industrial pattern of prosperous development, sound service system, strong cultural inheritance, and accelerated scientific research and innovation in the traditional Chinese medicine industry through multiple means like creating brands, promoting integration, and providing strong support.
