2024-06-08

Waxberries are entering the picking period around Linwu County.

The unique variety Taimei waxberry introduced by Longguiping Village of Fenshi Town is popular with customers because of its large size and sweet taste.

In the planting bases of Longguiping Village, the branches are covered with crimson and plump waxberries. Workers and tourists are busy picking them.

“Over 500 kg of waxberries are picked a day, and most of them are picked by repeat customers,” said Zhu Youzhong, a waxberry grower. In 1984, after retiring from the army, he returned to his hometown, and contracted 50 mu (about 3.33 hectares) of land to plant waxberry.

For the gradually saturated common waxberry market in Linwu County, Zhu Youzhong thought it a good way to plant a unique variety of waxberry.

To master a richer knowledge of planting, Zhu Youzhong continuously improved himself through self-learning and participating in training, and gradually accumulated planting experience.

Thanks to the local climate with sufficient sunlight, suitable water and large temperature differences between day and night, as well as Zhu Youzhong's meticulous management, the waxberries he grew have a good taste, and the average yield per tree reaches about 100 kilograms.

Sales mainly come from pick-your-own and bulk procurement in the orchard. Apart from local tourists, there are also many tourists from other places such as Changsha, Shenzhen, and Liangzhou.

In recent years, Longguiping Village has worked to develop characteristic fruit cultivation industry, which has initially taken shape. The planting area of Taimei waxberry is over 100 mu (6.67 hectares). There are also other kinds of fruits like fig, mulberry and strawberry.

Tourists can experience the fun of sightseeing and picking, and farmers also have an increase of over 3,000 yuan in per capita income.
