Songbai Village in Xiangyindu Subdistrict of Yongxing County has won many honors, such as “National Rural Governance Demonstration Village”, “Hunan Democratic Law-ruled Demonstration Village”, and “Hunan Civilized Village”. It achieved the collective economy of 1.021 million yuan in 2023, with a per capita income of 32,000 yuan. There are 130 shops in the village, including 2 workshops helping employment and 2 five-star ecological farms. All achievements are attributable to the hard work and dedication of the cadres and masses in the village.
Science and technology empower agriculture.
There is a giant sculpture in the large square of Woyuan Ecological Farm in Xiangyindu Subdistrict. A pair of large hands hold a rice bowl filled with “grains”, and six Chinese characters meaning “holding firm our rice bowl”, are engraved on the base. Not far from the sculpture, there are vast rice fields.
“Nowadays, things are quite different from the past. We had to work in the fields rolling up pants and sweating heavily in the past, but now all can be done by machines, including transplanting rice seedlings, fertilizing, and killing insects. We can plant rice even wearing leather shoes,” said Peng Jiaxing, a grain grower in Songbai Village.
Xiangyindu Subdistrict has promoted agricultural modernization, with rice transplanters transplanting seedlings in the fields and drones spraying pesticides in the air. “The remote control has become a new agricultural tool, and we can only need to move our fingertips to plant rice online,” said Peng.
The extensive application of modern science and technology has opened a new world for the high-quality development of modern agriculture.
Yongxing Dadi Agricultural Machinery Cooperative owns more than 80large-scale agricultural machines, and has transferred over 2,000 mu (about 133.33 hectares) of land, with an annual total output of 1,500 tons. It can provide one-stop services including deep plowing, seedling cultivation, rice transplanting, plant protection, harvesting, drying, and storage, involving the whole county of Yongxing, some towns and villages in Suxian, Beihu, Zixing, Yizhang, Rucheng, and Guiyang, and even other provinces like Henan, Hebei, Jiangxi, and Shandong.
Songbai Village has established 13 agricultural professional cooperatives, including Longwangshan Planting and Breeding and Xinda Fruit Industry, promoting the large-scale and intensive development of agriculture.
New tourism projects make rural areas beautiful.
At present, Xiangyindu Subdistrict is making efforts to improve the rural environment to make villages more livable and prosperous.
“Previously, it was a barren hill overgrown with weeds, but now it has become a beautiful small park, where many people take a walk and relax themselves every day,” said a villager.
There are over 500 camphor trees of various shapes in the Zhongxiao Garden of Songbai Village. Zhongxiao Garden, a small park covering an area of 50 mu (about 3.33 hectares), has a book bar, a discussion corridor, a farming wall, and an Internet-famous bridge. Meanwhile, guardrails have been installed on the walkway, flowers and plants have been planted, and a parking lot has been built.
In the afternoon, tourists can come to the Xihe Yulin Dam to enjoy a cool summer. The dam, completed in 2023, has become a summer resort, which receives nearly 1,000 tourists every day.
“The dam spans the Xihe River, with functions such as water regulation, sightseeing, and tourism. During the summer vacation, I often visit it with my family,” said a tourist, who drove from Yongxing County.
Characteristic agriculture helps villagers increase income
In recent years, in addition to grain crops, Songbai Village has developed characteristic crops such as fruits and vegetables, oil tea, and edible mushrooms, helping villagers fatten their wallets.
The oil tea forest renovation project with an investment of 1 million yuan has been completed at the oil tea base of Longwang Mountain Ecological Agriculture Cooperative, and workers were busy pruning the young oil tea trees.
“We have planted 1,500 mu (100 hectares) of oil tea, with an annual output of 20,000 kilograms of tea oil, 100 mu (about 6.67 hectares) of black plums, with an annual output of 15,000 kilograms of black plums, and 100 mu (about 6.67 hectares) of bingtang oranges, with an annual output of 100,000 kilograms,” said Wu Guiping, head of the cooperative.
The mushrooms planted by Zeng Xiaofeng in Songbai Village are tasty, with broad market prospects. Zeng Xiaofeng has also become a well-known leader to help villagers increase income.
The delicate pleurotus geesteranus mushrooms protrude from the fungi bags on rows of neatly arranged planting racks in the Edible Fungi Base.
“I have built 4 greenhouses and cultivated nearly 20,000 fungi bags. Every day, I’m busy picking, sorting, packing, and transporting them to the market. I can have an annual income of 200,000 yuan. The small edible mushrooms bring money to my family,” said Zeng Xiaofeng.
