In early autumn, Hehua carp raised in the rice fields of over 100 mu (6.67 hectares) can be harvested in Libai Village of Liantang Town, Guiyang County.
In recent years, the village has vigorously developed the ecological rice-fish farming for more benefits.
Libai Village is located in the hinterland of the Fucang Mountain area in Liantang Town, with fertile rice fields and excellent water quality, making it a good place to cultivate Hehua carp in rice fields.
The village first rents farmland from villagers for unified planning and then asks villagers to contract the land for production and management. Villagers can not only receive income from land transfer, labor services and guaranteed dividends, but also earn management fees from their contracted land.
In addition to providing free fish fry and feed, the village will also purchase the fish when harvested according to the market price.
“Growing fish in paddy fields is an industry with small investment and quick results. It takes about 4 months from fish fry to grown-up for sales, and does not require too much manpower, materials and money. Moreover, the market price is stable. There are many high standard farmlands like ours, so it’s very suitable for the development of the rice-fish farming project. The collective economic income of the village can increase by about 100,000 yuan,” said the village secretary.
In 2024, the village plants more than 400 mu (about 26.67 hectares) of rice, including 100 mu (about 6.67 hectares) of farmland for the rice-fish farming project.
By putting 25 kg of fish fry per mu (about 0.067 hectares), the yield per mu (about 0.067 hectares) can reach about 50 kg. Calculated at a market price of 40 yuan/kg, the total output value is expected to reach 200,000 yuan, which can bring an income increase of more than 1,000 yuan to each farming household.
“Next, we will further expand the area of fish farming, guide villagers to develop both high-altitude cold water rice and Hehua carp, to help villagers achieve a double harvest, and contribute more to rural revitalization,” said an official of Liantang town.
