In recent years, Guidong County has made efforts to develop the vegetable industry. It has planned urban professional vegetable bases, increased funding support, highlighted high-quality characteristics, and ensured the minimum guaranteed vegetable area.

“Our vegetables are cultivated with pure organic fertilizers and mountain spring water, with a long growth cycle and low fiber content. They taste fresh, sweet, and crispy,” said Fu Yongquan, production supervisor of Guidong Xinrong Agriculture Co., Ltd. Their vegetables are picked in the morning and get to dining tables of residents in other places at night.

The company settled in Guidong County in 2015 through investment promotion. Since then, it has built 8 vegetable planting bases with a total area of 1,560 mu (104 hectares), distributed in mountainous areas at an altitude of 800 to 1,600 meters. It has more than 500 local employees. The high-quality vegetables produced by the company, such as chili peppers, parsley, and fruit cabbage, are mainly sold to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Yangtze River Delta region in the form of contract farming.

“Since June this year until now, 20 tons of fresh vegetables have been delivered to other places every day. This year, the company targets at over 4,500 tons of orders, and more than 2,000 tons have been completed so far,” said Fu Yongquan.

In order to help leading vegetable enterprises develop steadily, Guidong County has established two technician groups and appointed nine special agricultural technicians. They provide training tailored to the different needs of farmers and new agricultural management entities, and release support policies, product demands, market forecasts, disaster forecasts, technical points and other information to farmers to help them avoid natural and market risks.

At the same time, more than 5 million yuan of agricultural funds from the entire county is used for the construction of vegetable bases and vegetable production subsidies every year, with a focus on supporting leading vegetable enterprises, cooperatives, and family farms, to drive the development of the vegetable industry in the county.

“At present, the county has developed 52,000 mu (about 3,466.67 hectares) of alpine vegetables, which have become an important pillar industry for rural revitalization. It has taken measures to promote the development of the vegetable industry, such as land transfer and helping farmers work nearby in a bid to increase farmers’ income,” said Wang Cunxiong, deputy director of the Agriculture and Rural Bureau of Guidong County.

Guidong County has initially formed an alpine vegetable production area in Oujiang, Zhaiqian, Datang, Dongluo, Shatian, and Sidu towns, and cultivated 13 large-scale leading vegetable production enterprises, including Guidong Xinrong Ecological Agriculture Company and Hunan Zuiyang High Mountain Ecological Agriculture Company. There is also 1 provincial-level production base for high-quality agricultural products, 8 “vegetable basket” bases for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, 2 enterprises authorized by the “Xiangjiangyuan” vegetable public brand, and 8 products certified as green food.

“We will make efforts to build vegetable bases based on the unique ecological environment and climatic conditions, accelerate the development of vegetable processing industry, expand production, sales matchmaking and export, and cultivate market entities in the vegetable industry, in a bid to make alpine vegetables an important industry to increase people’s income,” said Wang Cunxiong.
