Recently, the Oushi Shanzhidao Breeding Professional Cooperative of Dacun Village in Jingpo Town, Rucheng County planted vegetables in seedling greenhouses to increase agricultural efficiency and farmers’ income.
“In the past, I had nothing to do during winter. This year, I work in the greenhouses of the village and can earn over 3,000 yuan per month from caring to harvesting of vegetables,” said a villager, who was busy picking Chinese cabbages in the greenhouse together with other villagers.
Jingpo Town has over 60,000 square meters of centralized seedling cultivation greenhouses. After transplanting late rice, there is an idle period of over five months in the greenhouses.
Huang Maogen, deputy director of the agricultural service comprehensive center, said that the idle land and facilities are a waste of resources and not conducive to the maintenance of the facilities.
In order to enhance the comprehensive production capacity of greenhouses, technicians have been invited to conduct technical services like vegetable seedling breeding, and water and fertilizer management in the seedling raising greenhouses.
“The cooperative has 41 mu (about 2.73 hectares) of seedling greenhouses, and now vegetable crops are planted in the greenhouses during the 5-month idle period, which can increase the cooperative’s income by more than 160,000 yuan and bring job opportunities to more than 20 people in the surrounding area,” said Ou Wenqing, head of the cooperative.
Under the guidance of the technicians, the drip irrigation, insulation and other facilities in the greenhouses can be fully utilized to achieve the rotation of early and late rice seedlings and vegetables, which will reduce management and maintenance costs, improve planting efficiency, and help increase villagers’ income.
