Bingtang orange trees cover the hillsides in the orchard of Linli Village, Leiping Town, Guiyang County, with countless round and golden oranges emitting a tempting fragrance in the sunshine.
Leiping Town, located on the banks of the Chongling River, has sandy loam soil rich in trace elements such as phosphorus, potassium, zinc, iron, and selenium. The unique geographical conditions make for high-quality oranges here, with tender flesh and sweet juice, which are deeply loved by consumers.
“Most of the fruit trees in our orchard are over ten years old, with stable annual yield. This year, due to good rainfall, the orange yield reaches more than 2,000 kilograms per mu (about 0.067 hectares), higher than that of last year. Besides, the oranges’ sugar content, color, and taste are better,” said Li Ting, head of Guiyang County Tingli Agricultural Products Development Co., Ltd.
“We have fully implemented the label sales strategy to improve the quality of Bingtang oranges so as to increase price, and made efforts to explore new models for the development of collective economy based on fruits. We have established a cooperative union to achieve the united development of oranges,” said Chen Wenjun, Party deputy secretary of Leiping Town.
Now, the Bingtang orange industry has become the “golden key” for villagers to increase their income. It has achieved the annual income of 30 million yuan and required more than 6,000 seasonal laborers and 600 fixed laborers annually.
This year, there are 75,000 mu (5,000 hectares) of citrus in Guiyang County, with a total output of about 45,000 tons and a total output value of nearly 400 million yuan, driving nearly 10,000 people to increase their income.
“We will continue to increase policy support, provide exemplary incentives for entrepreneurship to drive employment, and encourage capable people to start businesses around the Bingtang orange industry. In addition, we will regularly carry out planting skills training to enhance the risk resistance of farmers, and establish assistance workshops to help enterprises solve the labor demand problem during the picking period and enable poverty-stricken households and people with employment difficulties to get employed nearby,” said Li Wenhui, deputy director of the Employment Service Center of Guiyang County Human Resources and Social Security Bureau.
Next, Leiping Town will plan to accelerate the construction of a mechanized ecological demonstration park, laying a solid foundation for the development of the Bingtang orange industry.
