In the strawberry base of Xicheng village, Shunfeng town, rows of strawberries are growing well.
There are three varieties of strawberries planted in the base. Due to weather conditions this year, strawberries just hit the market at the end of November and will last around May 1 of the following year.
“We raise seedlings every year around Qingming Festival, form ridges in mid August, and transplant seedlings in early September. When the temperature drops below 15 degrees Celsius, they are covered with large films to minimize pests and diseases.” Chen Liejun, a grower, has been planting strawberries since 2018.
In recent years, he has continuously improved technologies, built greenhouses, and introduced excellent strawberry varieties.
Nowadays, his base has 30 greenhouses covering nearly 10 mu (0.67 hectares).
As a sun plant, it’s important to control light, humidity and temperature in planting strawberries, to ensure that strawberries have a good taste when they are on the market.
Strawberries are deeply loved by people. They come on the market gradually from the end of November to early May of the following year.
When they first enter the market, the price is relatively high, with the highest selling price of 80 yuan per kilogram.
This year, Chen Liejun’s strawberry base is expected to produce up to 1,000 kilograms, which will not only enrich the “fruit basket” of citizens, but also broaden the channels for farmers to increase income.
