Villagers busy pruning grapevines

2024-12-19

As the temperature in winter is getting lower, grapevines have entered a dormant period. Fruit farmers were busy carrying out winter pruning and other management work during the farming season in the grape planting base of Yanjiang village of Wuling town, Yizhang county.

In the grape planting base, fruit farmer Xiao Jianxi organized villagers to prune vines while explaining the techniques of grape winter management. Xiao Jianxi started a business a few years ago. He sought support from the financial authority and obtained loans to plant grapes in a vineyard of over 30 mu (2 hectares). Now, all of grape trees are bearing fruits.

“Winter pruning can regulate the balance between grape growth and fruiting, prolong the fruiting years and the lifespan of grapevines. It will take 15 days to complete the rest pruning work,” said Xiao Jianxi. Only when solid grape pruning work is done in the early stage can there be high yields and harvests.

In recent years, relying on its proximity to the county, Yanjiang village has planted such grape varieties as Kyoho grape and Shine Muscat grape through a development model of cooperative plus base plus farmer.

Over 10,000 mu (666.67 hectares) of grape trees have been planted, with over 300 large growers. The annual output value of grapes reaches 130 million yuan, helping villagers increase income.

Currently, villagers are busy with winter management such as pruning, fertilizing and clearing the vineyard.
