Innovation drives income growth for tea farmers

2025-01-16

“I am from the She ethnic group in Guidong County of Chenzhou City, and I am wearing the traditional She ethnic costume.” Lan Lili, general manager of Lanlaodie Tea Industrial Development Company in Guidong County, showcased her costume at a meeting.

Lan Lili said that Guidong County has the highest average altitude in Hunan Province. The tea produced there has a good taste and quality, but some varieties of Jinguanyin tea are not yet popular in the market for not being characteristic.

Only innovation can lead to prosperity. Repeated experiments have been conducted on more than ten local tea tree varieties under the guidance of experts, and the best tea making process for each tea variety was finally found out. This helped gradually open up the market.

“What impressed me most was a tea farmer named Huang Yunfei. In the past, tea merchants from other places came to purchase his fresh tea leaves, and the annual income of his 2-mu (0.133 hectares) tea garden was only more than 1,100 yuan. Now the annual income reached more than 11,000 yuan. The company has driven the average income of tea farmers to increase by over 4,000 yuan.”

Lan Lili said that to increase the value of the industry, the company plans to let visitors experience the fun of tea picking and tea making when they come to escape summer heat.
