Linwu County is the “southern gateway” of Hunan Province. It is a natiaonl key county of the vegetable industry and a characteristic vegetable county in Hunan. Linwu taro is large in size and rich in powder. It also contains various vitamins and natural globulin that can enhance human immunity. It is a national standardized production base for green food raw materials and has become a pillar industry to increase agricultural efficiency and farmers’ income.

Nowadays, 23 Linwu taro marketing outlets have been established at home and abroad. Linwu County serves as the “logistics department” for vegetable supply in Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao, and the Pearl River Delta.
In order to solve the urgent and difficult problems faced by taro farmers, Linwu taro has been designated as a social service project for the vegetable industry in 2024. At present, the green prevention and control process has been completed, and graded packaging is in full swing. Since October 2024, over 30,000 tons of taro have been graded and packaged for more than 6,000 taro farmers. In January 2025, taro has entered the peak sales season, with a daily packaging volume of 500 tons. It is expected to package 60,000 tons of taro by the end of March.
“Taro is divided into four levels, which is distinguished by red, yellow, blue, and green packaging bags. The county has the unified standard. In the future, the standards will be refined and taro will gradually be divide into six levels in line with the national standards to achieve high quality and good price, and increase farmers’ income,” said Chen Linbing, chairman of Shunxi Taro Farmers’ Professional Cooperative.
Graded packaging has always been a concern for taro farmers. In the past, Linwu taro was sold without graded packaging. There were often instances of price and grade reductions.
“Previously, the gross income per mu (about 0.067 hectares) of taro was about 5,500 yuan, but now it has reached about 8,500 yuan per mu (about 0.067 hectares). Linwu taro has been planted for many years and it is a traditional industry, characteristic industry, and pillar industry in Linwu County. Taro with socialized services has boosted farmers’ income,” said Hu Chengbing, head of Linwu Yongsheng Agricultural Development Co., Ltd., which is one of the service providers.
