Anren county welcomes bumper harvest of morel mushrooms

2025-02-18

The planting base in Sannan Neighborhood Committee, Anping Town of Anren County is welcoming a bumper harvest of morel mushrooms, and villagers are busy picking them. This seemingly ordinary mushroom is becoming a strong power to drive rural economic development in the local area.

In the greenhouse of the base, a villager is picking mature morel mushrooms. She said that she could earn 100 yuan a day, while taking care of the family.

The head of the base introduced that this year’s ‘Liu Mei” variety of morel mushrooms are planted with no pesticides or fertilizers throughout the process, which ensures thick flesh and high quality. Now, the expected yield of fresh mushrooms per mu (0.067 hectares) in the base is 250 kg. With a market price of 120 yuan per kg, the net profit per mu (0.067 hectares) will exceed 10,000 yuan.

To smooth the production and sales chain, a model integrating online and offline ways and “fresh mushrooms plus dried mushrooms” has been established locally, and long-term orders have been signed with merchants in Changsha, Chenzhou, Guangdong and other places.

The improvement of cold chain logistics enables fresh mushrooms to reach dining tables within 12 hours. Mushroom drying and processing extend the industrial chain and enhance added values. Stable sales channels enhance farmers’ confidence and attract more villagers to join the industrial chain.

At present, the three bases in the town provide job opportunities for over 100 villagers, and the idle land resources during the slack season (November to April of the following year) are efficiently utilized.

Morel mushroom is one of Anping town’s five industries (the other four are rice, tobacco, medicinal herbs and beans). In the past two years, the planting area of morel mushrooms in the whole town has expanded to 500 mu (33.33 hectares), with an annual output value exceeding 15 million yuan.

Liu Zhifeng, Party secretary of the town, said that the town government would make efforts in technical guidance, expanding scale and brand building to make Anren morel mushroom a regional characteristic agricultural product.

Currently, the county has a morel mushroom planting area of more than 600 mu (40 hectares), and 7 demonstration bases, with an annual output of 15 tons of fresh mushrooms and an economic benefit of nearly 20 million yuan.
