At the Xinwang Agricultural Planting Development Cooperation Base of Banwu Village, Xujiadong Town, Suxian District, Chenzhou City, Zeng Lingxing, head of the base, was busy harvesting morel mushrooms on the morning of February 25.
“We began harvesting morel mushrooms on February 21 this year, and over 10 kilograms of mushrooms are delivered per day. As the temperature rises, the yield per mu (about 0.067 hectares) can reach about 200 kilograms,” said Zeng Lingxing.
Morel mushrooms are highly favored by consumers due to its high nutritional value and unique taste. However, they have extremely strict requirements for the growth environment.
In order to create the best growth environment, the base has built high-standard multi-span greenhouses with real-time monitoring of temperature and humidity. At the same time, nutrient packs made from natural materials such as wheat that have been high-temperature treated are placed around the mushroom ridges to provide sufficient nutrients for morel mushrooms.
“The G10 morel mushrooms we grow are introduced from Hunan Agricultural University. A low temperature environment is required before fruiting, and the temperature should be maintained at 15 ℃ to 20 ℃ after fruiting, with strict monitoring throughout the process,” said Zeng Lingxing.
Under his careful management, the morel mushrooms in 15 greenhouses grow well.
Morel mushrooms are usually planted in autumn and winter, and harvested in winter and spring. So villagers can avoid the busy farming season and use idle fields in winter to increase income. After the harvesting of morel mushrooms in mid-March, fruits and vegetables such as cantaloupes and chili peppers will also be planted in the greenhouses to maximize land efficiency.
In 2022, when Suxian District made efforts to promote the construction of the Xihe Rural Revitalization Demonstration Belt, Xujiadong Town introduced a morel mushroom planting project through investment promotion, which can provide jobs for more than 10 villagers every year.
