Land rotation boosts villagers’ income

2025-03-06

Villagers were busy harvesting tender flower stalks at the vegetable planting base of Qihan Ecological Agriculture Technology Co., Ltd. in Chenzhou City.

“After harvesting the tender flower stalks and Chinese mustard, we will plow the fields to improve soil with rotary tillers,” said Li Hong, chairman of the company.

In recent years, the base has cultivated vegetables such as Chinese cabbage, radish, and garlic sprouts in winter and lotus roots in summer. The lotus roots and their tips have excellent quality, and after deep processing, special lotus root products are sold to various places.

“This year, we have expanded the planting area to 1,200 mu (80 hectares). It’s expected that the crop yield will reach about 2,000 tons, which are mainly sold to the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the local vegetable markets,” said Li Hong.

At present, the base has become an enterprise authorized by “Xiangjiangyuan” brand and a “vegetable basket” production base for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. It has also worked with the Vegetable Research Institute of Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences to introduce new varieties for planting.

“This year, with the favorable policies, the company has carried out water-drought rotation in lotus root fields and established more than 100 mu (about 6.67 hectares) of vegetable greenhouses for planting loofah, with the expected output value of more than 4 million yuan, which can also drive employment for more than 100 villagers in the surrounding areas. This can not only meet the needs of the Greater Bay Area, but also increase villagers’ income,” said Li Hong.
